ABOUT ROB

After many years of working for others I have an opportunity to work at something of my own. I’ve always drawn images, mainly for practical illustration, but I’m now trying to draw and paint pictures for their own sake and see where that leads me.

I’m keen on finding things out for myself (ingrained stubborn streak) and although this can be fun and ultimately satisfying; it’s also often time consuming and I make a lot of mistakes. But I’m slowly discovering the things I enjoy and the techniques that help me craft the paintings I set out to create. At the moment my inspirations are somewhat eclectic and random, but I’m just trying various things to see what works best and I enjoy the most.

Paintings I love are often those with attention to detail. My art heroes are the likes of Rene Magritte and Arthur Rackham; also botanical illustrators and many of the modern portrait painters I come across.

I’m endlessly fascinated by the ability of a painter to portray detail in an image. So far whenever I’ve tried to paint abstract or impressionist images I’ve struggled; whereas I can happily (and endlessly according to my wife) tinker away at the detail of an image until I feel OK about it.

I hope you enjoy some of my work, if you are interested in owning any of the paintings, originals and signed limited edition prints are available, please get in touch using the contact page of this website.
